With head coach John Heitinga under significant pressure, Ajax is set to visit FC Twente on Sunday afternoon.
In his column for the newspaper Tubantia, journalist Leon ten Voorde offered some tongue-in-cheek advice for the embattled manager, suggesting he should leave assistant coach Marcel Keizer at home. He recalled Keizer’s own short-lived tenure as Ajax’s head coach in 2017.
“He was once head coach at Ajax, but coincidentally, he was dismissed before the winter break following a loss in Enschede,” Ten Voorde wrote. He mused on whether the pair would discuss the stadium’s reputation as a potential “Waterloo” for Ajax managers.
“To complete the regional link,” Ten Voorde added, “Keizer was succeeded by Erik ten Hag, a native of the Twente region, and the rest is history.”
The match between FC Twente and Ajax is scheduled to kick off at 12:15 PM on Sunday.
