Traylor Fires Back at Tulane Coach, QB After Heated Conference Win

Following a commanding 48-26 victory over Tulane on Thursday night, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor declared his team felt “extremely disrespected” by pre-game comments from the opposing coach and quarterback.

The controversy began earlier in the week when Tulane coach Jon Sumrall suggested to reporters that UTSA illegally pumps artificial noise into the Alamodome during games. Sumrall claimed other American Conference coaches had warned him, stating, “I don’t think it’s legal… That’s helped them create a home-field advantage.” He noted that the Green Wave had practiced with loud music to prepare.

After the win, Traylor fired back, calling the accusation a personal attack that undermined his program’s achievements. “A coach that said we basically cheated the last six years… disrespects everything we’ve done,” Traylor said. He credited UTSA’s formidable home environment to the crowd and band, whose director, he noted, was “scared to death to play” after the comments. The victory extended the Roadrunners’ record to a perfect 22-0 in regular-season conference home games under Traylor. “I just told my guys, ‘Man, we’re already living in his head,'” he remarked.

Traylor also took aim at Tulane quarterback Jake Retzlaff for what he called “unbelievable” disrespect. In a pre-game, miked-up interview, Retzlaff, who had previously won a bowl game in the stadium with BYU, addressed UTSA’s undefeated home streak by saying, “I’ll tell you what: I’m 1-0 in this stadium. So something’s got to give, and it’s not going to be me.”

Retzlaff was ultimately benched during the loss after throwing two interceptions.

In his final remarks, Traylor also directed criticism toward “spoiled-rotten media” and “fair-weather” fans, concluding, “We shut ’em up for a week.”
