19-Year-Old Sindarov Scores Sole Victory Amidst World Cup Draws

The fifth round of the 2025 FIDE World Cup began with a single decisive result, as 19-year-old GM Javokhir Sindarov secured a victory over GM Frederik Svane. The remaining seven matches ended in draws, setting the stage for tense second games.

In a tournament defined by upsets, with only two top-10 seeds remaining in the final 16, the day’s only win came after a long and hard-fought battle. Sindarov, who has previously eliminated top players like Alireza Firouzja and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in past World Cups, applied relentless pressure on Svane. The German grandmaster defended resiliently past the time control, but a late error proved fatal, allowing the Uzbek star to convert his advantage. Svane must now win on demand to force tiebreaks.

The most anticipated match of the round between second-seed Arjun Erigaisi and 15th-seed Levon Aronian also ended peacefully. Aronian, aiming for a record third World Cup title, expertly defended against a fierce attack from Arjun to hold the draw. Both players face high stakes in the return game, as Arjun needs to reach at least the semifinals to qualify for the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament.

Another dramatic draw occurred between GM Sam Shankland and GM Daniil Dubov. Shankland played ambitiously, employing a novelty and an enterprising exchange sacrifice before rejecting a draw offer. This risky approach gave Dubov significant chances to win, but he was short on time and could not find the path to victory, allowing the game to end in a draw.

Several other matches concluded without a winner. GM Alexander Donchenko, who entered the round with a remarkable 2843 performance rating after four classical wins, was held to a draw by GM Liem Le. The lowest-rated player left in the event, 2617-rated GM Aleksey Grebnev, continued his impressive run by comfortably drawing with Black against GM Andrey Esipenko.

The match between GM Jose Martinez and GM Pentala Harikrishna was a quick and theoretically precise draw in the Italian Game. Other uneventful draws were recorded in the games between GM Gabriel Sargissian and GM Nodirbek Yakubboev, and GM Sam Sevian and GM Wei Yi.
