The competitive landscape for artificial intelligence (AI) chips may be on the verge of a significant transformation, potentially challenging Nvidia’s market dominance that has been firmly in place since 2023.
Until recently, AI hyperscalers equipping their data centers had a limited set of choices for parallel processors. Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) have been the overwhelming favorite, with AMD’s GPUs securing a smaller portion of the market. Another strategy, pursued by the largest data center operators, involved collaborating with Broadcom to create custom AI accelerators known as application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), which are tailored for particular workloads.
However, a potential new competitor is emerging. Recent reports indicate that Alphabet may be preparing to sell its proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), co-designed with Broadcom, directly to third parties, with Meta Platforms rumored to be the first major customer. Such a deal would introduce a powerful new hardware option to the market.
This development positions three key companies to benefit significantly.
First, Alphabet would open up a major new revenue stream. Currently, companies can only access TPU performance by renting capacity on the Google Cloud platform. Selling the hardware directly would establish a new business line that investors have not yet factored into their valuation of the company, further diversifying Alphabet’s income beyond its core advertising and cloud businesses. The market reacted to this possibility with a surge in Alphabet’s stock price following the reports.
Broadcom also stands to gain considerably. As Alphabet’s design partner, it already profits from every TPU produced. While the financial details of third-party sales are not yet public, an agreement with Meta would likely boost what is already a rapidly growing segment for Broadcom. The company’s AI-related revenue has seen substantial growth, and broader adoption of TPUs could accelerate this trend significantly.
The third beneficiary is Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC), a foundational player in the AI sector. The leading AI hardware providers, including Nvidia, Broadcom, and Alphabet, are “fabless” chipmakers; they design their chips but outsource the manufacturing. TSMC is the world’s largest and most advanced chip foundry, producing the hardware for nearly all major players.
This makes TSMC a neutral but essential component of the AI ecosystem. Its business grows with the overall demand for AI chips, regardless of which company’s designs prove most popular. If competitors begin to erode Nvidia’s market share, TSMC will continue to thrive by manufacturing chips for all of them. Despite its critical role, TSMC’s stock trades at a more conservative forward earnings multiple compared to many of its peers, positioning it as a key beneficiary of the industry’s continued expansion.
