Emergency services have responded to an aircraft crash at London Southend Airport, which resulted in the plane catching fire. Essex Police confirmed they were alerted to the incident, involving a 12-metre aircraft, shortly before 4:00 PM BST on Sunday.
A major multi-agency operation is underway at the scene. The East of England Ambulance Service dispatched four crews, including a rapid response vehicle and a hazardous area response team. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, which received the call at 3:58 PM, sent crews from Southend, Rayleigh Weir, and Basildon, supported by off-road vehicles from Billericay and Chelmsford.
As a result of the crash, all flights from the airport have been cancelled. Police have also evacuated the nearby Rochford Hundred Golf Club and Westcliff Rugby Club as a precautionary measure.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area while the emergency response continues, which is expected to last for several hours. David Burton-Sampson, the Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, stated on social media, “My thoughts are with everyone involved.”
