Apple’s next major software update, iOS 26, is scheduled for release this fall, introducing significant new capabilities powered by Apple Intelligence AI and a redesigned user interface called Liquid Glass. However, as with previous updates, iOS 26 will not be available for all iPhone models.
The update brings essential security upgrades that patch vulnerabilities exploitable by attackers. While Apple will continue to issue security fixes for the current iOS 18 for a limited time after iOS 26 launches—typically a grace period of up to six months to allow users to upgrade smoothly—support will eventually cease. Continuing to use iOS 18 beyond this period will increase security risks, potentially exposing users to data theft and spyware.
In addition to foundational security patches, iOS 26 introduces several new privacy and security features. A new Call Screening function will automatically answer calls from unknown numbers, asking for the caller’s name and purpose before ringing the user’s device. The Wallet app will gain the ability to create a digital ID using a U.S. passport, which can be used for verification at TSA checkpoints and within apps. Furthermore, Safari’s privacy will be enhanced with advanced fingerprinting protection extended to all browsing by default.
For users in high-risk professions, such as business executives, journalists, or political figures, whose devices are not on the compatibility list, upgrading to a newer iPhone within the next year is strongly recommended. All users should monitor Apple’s list of vintage and obsolete devices to know when their model will no longer receive any updates.

While the exact release date in September has not been announced, a public beta of iOS 26 is currently available through the Apple Beta Software Program. If your iPhone cannot run iOS 26, it is crucial to continue installing all available security fixes for your current operating system and consider upgrading your device in the near future to maintain security.
