Residents in New York’s Tioga and Broome counties faced a dangerous flash flood warning Sunday evening following a period of heavy rain, with more storms forecast for the region.
Governor Kathy Hochul alerted residents to the situation, noting the potential for further danger as more storms were expected late Sunday night.
The National Weather Service issued the flash flood warning for the Newark Valley area until 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
According to the agency, the area has already received 3 to 4.5 inches of rain. Forecasters anticipate additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches per hour through the evening, with total accumulations of another 1 to 2 inches possible in surrounding areas.
