The Milwaukee Brewers have recalled right-handed pitcher Tobias Myers from Class AAA Nashville ahead of their series opener against the Washington Nationals. Myers replaces left-hander Aaron Ashby, who has been placed on the paternity list.
While a paternity list absence typically lasts three days, manager Pat Murphy indicated that Myers could remain with the major league club beyond the All-Star break. The team is considering him for a long-relief role, a position currently held by right-hander Easton McGee.
“Keep him stretched out in a long relief role, and if he has to jump into (the rotation), he can,” Murphy said. “We’ll see. That McGee kid’s throwing good.”
The recall marks a potential turning point in a turbulent 2025 season for Myers. An oblique strain set him back in spring training, and after returning to the rotation in late April, he struggled, posting a 4.95 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP in six appearances before being optioned to Nashville in mid-May.
However, the 26-year-old right-hander rediscovered his form in the minors. In 11 starts for the Sounds, Myers recorded a 2.93 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP with 54 strikeouts over 58.1 innings. His performance peaked with his final start, a six-inning, two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts that earned him International League Player of the Week honors.
This recent success is reminiscent of Myers’s breakout 2024 campaign, when he emerged from relative obscurity to become a key part of the Brewers’ rotation. He finished last season with a 9-6 record, a 3.00 ERA, and 127 strikeouts in 138 innings. His five shutout innings in Game 3 of the National League wild-card series against the New York Mets was the best start for the Brewers in the series.
“It isn’t so much what’s changed,” Murphy said of Myers’s turnaround. “He’s just a little more consistent. Velo’s a little more consistent. The stuff itself is a little more consistent. We know the guy’s good enough. We’ve seen his greatness.”
Meanwhile, McGee has been effective in his role, with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP over four appearances this season. “He’s thrown the ball good the couple of times he’s been in it for us,” Murphy said. “He’s reliable. He reminds me of (Colin Rea) in the early stages – you know what you’re going to get, and it’s the same every time out. I really like the kid.”
