Former NBA player Michael Beasley has revealed he spent two years homeless and broke after his career earnings were depleted. Speaking on the “3s and Ones” podcast, Beasley said that from 2021 to 2023, he was sleeping in his car after his fortune was mismanaged by family and allegedly stolen by his accountant.
The former No. 2 overall draft pick described the profound isolation he felt, stating he didn’t even have enough money for a small meal from his favorite fast-food restaurant. He explained that those around him failed to offer help, leaving him to face his struggles alone. “My stomach was growling and tomorrow came,” Beasley said. “I was hungry by myself, and tomorrow came.”
Beasley attributed his financial collapse to several factors, including excessive spending by his family, theft by his CPA, and obligations to the IRS and child support. He recalled being financially unstable as early as his third year in the league, even while competing against stars like Kobe Bryant.
He also admitted that he projected an image of confidence to the outside world, which may have prevented people from realizing the severity of his situation. Internally, however, he was scared but felt unable to admit his vulnerability.
This is not the first time Beasley has discussed feeling abandoned. In a previous appearance on “The Pivot” podcast, he spoke about the lack of support he received from the NBA community during his darkest moments. “I’ve reached out so much that I have to die with some kind of dignity,” he said at the time.
Regarded as one of the most gifted offensive talents of his generation, Beasley’s career was often sidetracked by off-court issues. He now uses his story as a cautionary tale for young athletes, emphasizing the stark difference between his career trajectory and that of more stable stars like Kevin Durant and Draymond Green. Despite his hardships, Beasley credits his dedication to basketball with helping him survive the ordeal.
