A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Atlanta was forced to return to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Friday after one of its engines caught fire shortly after takeoff.
Video footage of the incident shows flames erupting from the left engine of the Boeing 767, which was carrying 226 passengers and nine crew members.
Delta flight 446 successfully returned to LAX, landing safely and taxiing to its gate under its own power. According to the airline, the pilots turned back due to an issue with the left engine.
Passengers deplaned normally, and there were no visible signs of fire upon the aircraft’s arrival at the gate. Firefighters conducted a precautionary inspection of the plane.
An investigation into the cause of the incident is now underway. Delta confirmed that all passengers were rebooked on a new aircraft to complete their journey to Atlanta.
