A cold front moving into a hot, humid airmass is expected to trigger numerous strong storms across the region on Friday afternoon and evening.
The primary threats include torrential rainfall with the potential for localized flooding, as well as frequent and dangerous lightning. While most storms are expected to remain below severe limits, some may produce damaging wind gusts. Large hail and tornadoes are not anticipated.
The storm activity is forecast to begin developing after 2:00 p.m. and will continue throughout the evening before gradually subsiding by midnight.
As the front moves south of the area overnight, it will bring an end to the recent heat wave. The weekend is expected to be significantly cooler, with highs only reaching the low 80s. A few showers may linger into Saturday, but Sunday is forecast to be mainly dry.
