WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Robbie Brewer, a 53-year-old veteran stock car driver, died after suffering a medical emergency during a race at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday.
During a 20-lap Sportsman Series event, Brewer’s car struck a wall head-on and came to a stop on the quarter-mile track. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, emergency crews removed the roof of the vehicle to extract Brewer, who was then transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The specific details of the medical emergency have not been disclosed.
“We are saddened by the passing of Robbie Brewer,” track officials said in a statement on Sunday. “Robbie was a talented and passionate racer, and a highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie’s family and friends at this time.”
Brewer was a long-time fixture at the stadium, a popular track that hosts weekly races and was the site of this year’s preseason NASCAR Cup Series exhibition. His career at the oval began in 1990, leading to nearly 260 starts in the Sportsman Division and a points championship in 2011.
Fellow driver Brad Lewis remembered Brewer as a mentor and skilled racer. “He was like a big brother to me,” Lewis said. “He was a wheelman through and through. I’m not only going to honor him the rest of the season but for as long as we race out there. He’ll be missed.”
