An Austin police officer was shot and injured near Zilker Park early Wednesday morning following an encounter with a gunman. The officer is expected to survive, according to the Austin Police Association.
A second person was also shot and taken to the hospital, though her connection to the incident has not been determined.
The shooting prompted authorities to issue an emergency shelter-in-place alert at 5:30 a.m. for the Zilker area. The alert warned residents to be on the lookout for a white man in a green shirt and tan pants, described as armed and dangerous.
Officials said the officers were already present in the area and not responding to a specific emergency call when the shooting occurred. The circumstances leading to the confrontation are under investigation.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted at 6:40 a.m. It was not immediately clear if a suspect had been taken into custody.
