Singer and entrepreneur Akon is facing a legal challenge after his wife, Tomeka Thiam, filed for divorce just four days before their 29th wedding anniversary.
According to legal documents, Thiam cited irreconcilable differences in the filing. She is seeking joint legal custody and primary physical custody of their 17-year-old daughter. The filing also includes a request for spousal support for Thiam while seeking to prevent the court from awarding any to Akon.
The divorce proceedings add a new dimension to Akon’s widely discussed family life, as Thiam is one of his multiple wives. The artist is reported to have nine children in total. As of this report, Akon has not publicly commented on the divorce filing.
This personal challenge coincides with Akon’s recent efforts to defend his professional endeavors, particularly the “Akon City” project. He has publicly pushed back against reports claiming his futuristic city project in Senegal has been shut down.
“We’re still building it,” Akon stated. “It’s something that goes beyond the capabilities of what they think one man can create… it starts off as a dream, and then it continues as something that becomes a reality.”
He also addressed the spread of misinformation online regarding the project. “You can’t fight the Internet,” he said. “I got teams on it trying to combat all the negative, false information that these people are putting out.”
