The Florida Gators are set to receive a significant offensive boost, as freshman receiver Dallas Wilson is expected to make his collegiate debut Saturday against No. 9 Texas.
Coach Billy Napier confirmed Monday that Wilson has returned to practice for the first time since injuring his left foot in training camp. Napier described his availability as “a big deal” for the struggling Gators.
“Three good days of work last week, and I thought he handled the load well,” Napier said. “He feels really good. So far, so good.”
Wilson, a 6-foot-3 newcomer from Tampa, generated considerable excitement during Florida’s spring game in April, where he recorded 10 catches for 195 yards and two touchdowns. His momentum was halted by the foot injury late in camp, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as the Gators (1-3, 0-1 SEC) stumbled through three consecutive losses.
The team’s offense has been particularly ineffective, scoring just 16, 10, and 7 points in losses to South Florida, LSU, and Miami, respectively, amplifying pressure on Napier.
Much of the focus has been on quarterback DJ Lagway, who has appeared rusty after missing most of last season with injuries. During Florida’s 26-7 loss at Miami on Sept. 20, Lagway completed only 12 of 23 passes for 61 yards, hampered by an offensive line that struggled to protect him.
Napier said he used the recent bye week to get Lagway more live repetitions but emphasized the need for a better supporting cast.
“Each position group needs to step up,” Napier stated. “More detail, eliminate errors, eliminate penalties… I just think more detail and better overall play around him. And, obviously, he needs to continue to get back closer to being himself.”
Wilson’s return addresses a clear need for playmakers at wide receiver. Outside of freshman Vernell Brown III, who leads the team with 18 receptions for 219 yards, the receiving corps of Eugene Wilson III, J. Michael Sturdivant, and Aidan Mizell has yet to make a consistent impact. The Gators are optimistic that Dallas Wilson can immediately elevate the offense against an opponent that currently boasts the SEC’s top-ranked scoring defense.
“Just having him out is going to be amazing for us,” Lagway said. “His ability to go deep, his ability to make plays underneath and be able to make miraculous plays with the ball in his hands, it’s going to be great to have him back.”
