Advantage Bayern as Dortmund and Leipzig Stalemate in Title Clash

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig played out a 1-1 draw, giving league leaders Bayern Munich the opportunity to widen their gap at the top of the Bundesliga.

The result keeps second-placed Dortmund’s unbeaten start to the season intact, but they now trail Bayern by a point having played an extra game. Leipzig remain a point further back in third.

Leipzig struck first in the seventh minute when Christoph Baumgartner converted Assan Ouedraogo’s headed pass. The goal ended Dortmund’s bid for a fifth consecutive league clean sheet, but the hosts responded 18 minutes later when Yan Couto’s deflected strike found the net after an unselfish pass from Serhou Guirassy.

Ouedraogo missed a clear opportunity to restore Leipzig’s lead early in the second half, shooting wide after goalkeeper Gregor Kobel parried a cross into his path. In their search for a winner, Dortmund brought on substitutes Jobe Bellingham and Julian Brandt. Bellingham had a shot blocked from close range, while Brandt sent a looping header just over the crossbar.

Bayern can extend their lead to four points with a victory at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen continued their impressive unbeaten run in all competitions, securing a 2-0 home victory against a struggling Union Berlin. Kasper Hjulmand’s side took the lead in the 33rd minute when Ernest Poku finished a well-worked team move for his second goal in as many matches.

The hosts doubled their advantage four minutes into the second half after a critical error from Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow, who passed the ball directly to 19-year-old Christian Kofane for an easy finish into an empty net. The goal marked another milestone for the young striker, who was playing in Cameroon a year ago and scored his first Champions League goal mid-week. The win lifts Leverkusen to fourth in the table.
