Following its blockbuster theatrical run, Apple’s “F1 The Movie” will make its streaming debut on Apple TV+ on Friday, December 12. The film, which surpassed expectations by grossing over $600 million at the worldwide box office, is poised to become the platform’s biggest premiere of the year.
The movie’s success marks a significant moment for Apple’s film division. After a series of theatrical disappointments in 2023-2024 led to a strategic shift toward straight-to-streaming releases like “The Gorge” and “Wolfs,” the massive box-office performance of “F1 The Movie” provides a powerful boost for its transition to the streaming service. The extensive marketing and word-of-mouth generated over the past six months are expected to drive record viewership for Apple TV+.
Apple plans to capitalize on the film’s popularity with its recent acquisition of exclusive U.S. broadcast rights for the Formula 1 sport. By attracting viewers with the movie, the company aims to build a dedicated audience for its live racing coverage, which will be integrated into the same platform.
Live Formula 1 races are scheduled to begin on Apple TV+ on March 7, 2026. All F1 content, including Grand Prix races and practice sessions, will be included with a standard subscription at no additional cost.
This dual strategy of a hit film followed by accessible live sports coverage mirrors the effect of Netflix’s “Drive to Survive,” which significantly grew Formula 1’s fanbase in the United States.
