France’s national holiday, La fête nationale, is celebrated on July 14th. Known as Bastille Day in English, the date this year falls on a Monday, creating a long weekend for many. Festivities across the country feature military parades, with the most famous held on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, alongside local concerts and fireworks. In regions at high risk of wildfires, drone light shows are an increasingly common alternative. The traditional Bals de pompiers (firefighters’ balls) will also take place at fire stations, either on July 14th or during the preceding weekend.
While a day of celebration, the public holiday affects the operating hours of many businesses and services.
Public Transportation
Mainline train and long-distance bus services will generally run as normal. Urban public transport systems will likely operate on a reduced Sunday schedule. In Paris, some metro stations near the Eiffel Tower will close for security during the evening’s concert and fireworks display, though train lines will continue to run. Bus services in smaller towns may be suspended entirely.
Retail and Shopping
Most large retailers, department stores, and supermarkets will remain open, though potentially with reduced hours. Smaller independent shops will typically close for the day. Most boulangeries (bakeries) will be open, unless Monday is their usual closing day.
Restaurants and Cafés
With the holiday falling on a Monday—a common closing day for the hospitality sector—many establishments will remain shut. Restaurants and cafés that normally open on Mondays are expected to operate, but checking hours in advance is recommended. Some venues may also host special ticketed events.
Offices and Public Facilities
Banks, post offices, and government buildings such as the préfecture will be closed, along with most private offices. Leisure facilities like sports centers and swimming pools are usually open, but may have altered schedules. Major tourist sites are expected to maintain normal operating hours.
Health Services
The majority of doctors’ and dentists’ offices will be closed. Hospital emergency rooms and out-of-hours services will operate as usual. Pharmacies will follow a rota system (pharmacie de garde) to ensure continuous coverage in every area. To find the nearest open pharmacy, search online for “pharmacie de garde” plus the name of your local commune.
