The Chicago Bears are bolstering their injury-plagued secondary by signing veteran safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The move provides immediate depth following the team’s decision to place cornerback Kyler Gordon on injured reserve, sidelining him for a minimum of four games.
Gardner-Johnson offers significant versatility, with extensive experience playing the nickel cornerback position. Originally a fourth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in the 2019 NFL Draft, he spent three seasons with the team before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.
His 2022 season in Philadelphia marked a career-best performance, where he led the league with six interceptions while recording 67 total tackles, eight pass breakups, and five tackles for loss. His career also includes a one-year stint with the Detroit Lions. During his time in New Orleans, Gardner-Johnson played under Dennis Allen, who was his defensive coordinator before becoming the Saints’ head coach.
