Singer Billie Eilish publicly criticized Elon Musk on her Instagram account Thursday, suggesting in a series of expletive-filled posts that the billionaire should use his wealth to address global crises. The incident occurred just weeks after her previous comments urging billionaires to donate their fortunes gained widespread attention.
On her Instagram story, Eilish shared several posts from the European feminist organization My Voice, My Choice. One post cited a United Nations World Food Programme estimate that $40 billion annually could end world hunger by 2030. Others suggested Musk could fund efforts to save endangered species or contribute the $70 billion the UN estimates is needed to rebuild Gaza. After sharing these images, Eilish directed a profane message at Musk.
One of the posts Eilish shared incorrectly labeled Musk as a trillionaire. According to Forbes estimates, his net worth is less than half that, though a recently approved Tesla pay package could potentially make him a trillionaire within a decade.
This follows Eilish’s viral speech at the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards on October 29. While accepting the Music Innovator Award, she called out the billionaires in the room, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and “Star Wars” creator George Lucas. “If you are a billionaire, why are you a billionaire?” she asked. “No hate, but give your money away, shorties.”
At the same event, it was announced Eilish would donate $11.5 million in proceeds from her most recent tour to causes including food equity and climate justice. Her remarks sparked a public debate, drawing both praise and criticism. While supporters like Sen. Elizabeth Warren lauded Eilish for asking the “right question,” some observers noted that prominent billionaires like Zuckerberg have already donated billions to charitable causes.
