Gearbox has revealed details about “Dynamic Events,” a major new system in the upcoming Borderlands 4 designed to create a more reactive and replayable world. In an interview, Associate Creative Director Grant Kao explained that the feature aims to enhance the game’s seamless world, storytelling, and emergent gameplay.
“I love the dynamic events because it’s a feature that helps augment all the things about the seamless world that we want, from storytelling to the reactive gameplay whenever a player does things,” said Kao.
This system is intended to provide a fresh layer of optional content, offering players meaningful activities beyond repeating main story missions or side quests. Instead of grinding the same bosses for specific loot, players can engage in varied events that keep the experience fresh. This design philosophy also extends to character builds, encouraging more playstyle diversity.
“We know there are builds that will be for how quickly you can kill a boss,” Kao noted. “And now we have builds that can be, like, how fast do you mob? You know, how fast do you go through and just wipe out 10 plus enemies in an encounter?”
Dynamic Events are not truly random but are triggered by a system that analyzes player data against a set of parameters. This allows the game to present a wide variety of scenarios tailored to the player’s history. “There is a set of parameters and conditions that basically read off a player’s data,” Kao explained. “Then there’s a set of conditions that determines different buckets of events that could happen… Variation is king.”
The system also tracks which events a player has completed to ensure variety and prevent repetition. “If you’ve done that event more than once, we record that too,” Kao added. “We respect the fact that players have done this more than once, and players are here with more than one player, so what can we do and pull from that pool?”
For multiplayer sessions, these events will scale accordingly. Playing with friends increases enemy density, introduces more elite or “badass” enemy types, and demands greater team coordination. The game will also tailor the experience based on the combined progress and objectives of the players in the group, creating a more cohesive and challenging cooperative environment.
While co-op increases the overall challenge, Kao confirmed that loot remains instanced for each player. However, the total amount of gear dropped increases with more players, encouraging trading and sharing among friends. To avoid the frustration of trying to farm a specific random event for a unique item, Gearbox has opted for a broader loot pool.
“Dynamic events, being dynamic in nature, would have been hard for the core player to target one specific event with one specific dedicated loot pool,” Kao stated. “Instead, what we did was we made sure that the loot pool inside any chest that you could acquire from a dynamic event could touch whatever legendary we wanted to touch.”
These events are categorized into three distinct tiers:
-
Ambient Events: These are designed to feel like a natural part of the world. Observant players who notice and interact with these subtle occurrences may be rewarded.
-
Activity-Driven Events: These are more structured, multi-step encounters that might involve finding an object or completing a series of tasks. Their rewards are often tied to the biome in which they occur.
-
World Events: Described as “very large spectacle-filled events unique per zone,” these are the highest tier and offer the chance to earn some of the game’s rarest legendary items and cosmetics.
