Cardinals Elevate Bam Knight to Starting Running Back

The Arizona Cardinals have clarified their running back situation, with coach Jonathan Gannon naming Bam Knight the starter for their upcoming Monday Night Football game against Dallas.

The announcement resolves a week of uncertainty at the position. Although Michael Carter took the initial practice reps, Knight will get the start. Gannon indicated the team will employ a “hot-hand” approach, with the most effective runner likely earning more carries. The running back corps will also be bolstered by the return of Emari Demercado, who missed Week 7 with an ankle injury.

“He will be the first one that goes out, but all three of them to me have their own role,” Gannon said. “We’ll see who’s running it well, and that guy will probably, honestly, get a little more touches.”

The confusion earlier in the week stemmed from Carter’s brief release and re-signing to the practice squad, a move typically made to free up a roster spot. Knight has outperformed Carter this season, averaging 3.5 yards per carry compared to Carter’s 2.8.

Looking ahead, running back Trey Benson is eligible to return from a knee injury next week. Gannon confirmed Benson is progressing well and has started to reintegrate into team meetings.

While the team continues to await the return of quarterback Kyler Murray from a foot injury, the defense is also nearing full strength.

Defensive tackle Walter Nolen and slot cornerback Garrett Williams are both expected to be activated from injured reserve, which explains the recent roster moves involving Carter and defensive back Darren Hall.

Edge rusher BJ Ojulari, who has been sidelined for 15 months with a significant knee injury, has returned to practice but will require more time before playing. Gannon expressed encouragement, noting he was “surprised by how fast” Ojulari looked. Meanwhile, cornerback Will Johnson’s appearance on the injury report with a groin issue was downplayed by the coach, who called it a “precaution” due to minor tightness.
