D.C. United Names René Weiler as New Head Coach

D.C. United has appointed decorated Swiss manager René Weiler as the club’s new head coach, pending the receipt of a U.S. work permit. Kevin Flanagan will continue to serve as interim head coach until Weiler’s arrival.

Weiler, 51, brings over two decades of international coaching experience and a history of winning major trophies, making him one of the most accomplished managerial appointments in both D.C. United and MLS history.

“René is a tactician with a proven ability to implement a clear and disciplined playing style,” said Ally Mackay, D.C. United’s General Manager and Chief Soccer Officer. “He builds teams that are organized, aggressive out of possession, and purposeful in attack. His experience developing talent and demanding high standards makes him the ideal leader to guide this project.”

Weiler’s extensive résumé includes league championships in Belgium, Egypt, and Switzerland. He led R.S.C. Anderlecht to the 2016–17 Belgian Pro League title and a UEFA Europa League quarterfinal run. He also guided Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly SC to the 2019–20 Premier League title with an impressive record of 21 wins, eight draws, and only one loss.

“D.C. United is a club with a proud history and a passionate fanbase,” Weiler said. “The foundation gives me confidence in what we can build. There’s still a lot of work ahead, but I’m fully committed to leading this club back to where it belongs, competing at the highest level in MLS.”

Weiler’s managerial career has spanned Europe, Africa, and Asia. He has managed FC Luzern and FC Aarau in his native Switzerland, 1. FC Nürnberg in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga, and the Kashima Antlers in Japan’s top flight. Most recently, he served a two-year tenure as both head coach and sporting director for Servette FC in the Swiss Super League, where he was central to the club’s competitive stability, roster planning, and youth development.

As a player, Weiler was a midfielder who won the 1992–93 Swiss league title with FC Aarau and earned two caps for the Switzerland National Team.

Further details regarding Weiler’s official start date will be announced upon the completion of his visa process.
