Nearly four decades into their career, Deftones are experiencing a major resurgence, driven by a new wave of nostalgia for the late ’90s and early 2000s and a fanbase that continues to grow younger. This renewed interest fueled the Sacramento hard rock band’s most successful tour ever earlier this year, which included sold-out performances at New York’s Madison Square Garden and the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
Building on this momentum, Deftones have announced their first album in five years, private music, set for release on August 22 via Reprise/Warner. The 11-track album was introduced with the lead single, “my mind is a mountain.”
For the new record, the band reunited with producer Nick Raskulinecz, who previously helmed their 2010 album Diamond Eyes and its 2012 successor, Koi No Yokan. The collaboration on Diamond Eyes was pivotal, created after the band shelved the album Eros when bassist Chi Cheng was critically injured in a 2008 car accident. Cheng passed away in 2013.
Frontman Chino Moreno has credited Raskulinecz with spearheading the rapid, two-month creation of Diamond Eyes, capturing the band’s spirit during a tumultuous time.
Deftones’ lasting influence is frequently tied to landmark albums such as 2000’s White Pony, which features enduring tracks like “Change (In the House of Flies)” and “Digital Bath.” Moreno attributes the album’s longevity to its expansive, drum-forward soundscapes, influenced by electronic artists like DJ Shadow, calling it a “headphone record” that has given it life for decades.
The band will support the new album with a tour beginning August 22 in Vancouver and running through September 15 in Denver.
