French comedian Bun Hay Mean has died at the age of 43 after a fatal fall from an eighth-floor apartment in Paris. The incident occurred on Thursday morning in the city’s 17th arrondissement.
Emergency services, including the Paris fire brigade and police, were present at the scene on Boulevard des Batignolles, where the building entrance was secured and the sidewalk cordoned off. The Paris prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation to determine the cause of death, with authorities yet to confirm whether it was an accident or suicide.
While a fixture in the French comedy scene for over a decade, Bun Hay Mean gained wider public recognition for his role as the antagonist in the 2023 film Astérix & Obélix: The Middle Kingdom, starring alongside Vincent Cassel and Manu Payet.
Known for his rapid-fire delivery, sharp dark humor, and masterful improvisation, he first made a name for himself in the mid-2010s. Initially nicknamed “Chinois marrant” (Funny Chinaman), a moniker he used to deconstruct stereotypes, he was discovered by Jamel Debbouze’s first director, Alais Degois. After joining the Jamel Comedy Club in 2014, he broke through with his first one-man show, a raw performance that dismantled clichés with provocative humor.
The comedian’s success, achieved in his thirties, came after a period of significant hardship. After leaving a career in IT to pursue comedy in Paris, he experienced homelessness even as his career began to take off. “I would make 2,000 or 3,000 people laugh, and an hour later, I’d be alone sleeping at a tram stop. An emotional elevator,” he recounted in a 2017 interview.
More recently, Bun Hay Mean had faced further challenges. The launch of his third show was described as chaotic, and he was hospitalized while on tour in La Réunion, reportedly while “in suffering.”
He had recently returned to the stage with a new show titled Kill Bun. He was scheduled to perform it in Montreal, Canada, this Friday evening.
