During the SEC’s weekly media teleconference, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz made an unusual request as his time concluded, asking moderator Chuck Dunlap if he could pose the first question to his Alabama counterpart, Kalen DeBoer.
“I just want to know if he’s gonna wear that black hoodie or not,” Drinkwitz said. “I call it the hoodie of death.”
With the media corps’s approval, Dunlap later introduced the unconventional question ahead of the teams’ matchup in Columbia on Saturday. “Hey Kalen,” Drinkwitz began, “Are you gonna wear the black hoodie of death on the sideline this game, with us wearing black jerseys?”
The question refers to a superstition surrounding DeBoer’s sideline attire. Since arriving at Alabama, the Crimson Tide is 11-2 when he wears the black hoodie and 1-3 when he does not. DeBoer, who is aware of the narrative, has worn it for every game since a social media post highlighting the record went viral among fans.
Laughing at the question, DeBoer confirmed his intentions. “Oh, coach Drink,” he responded. “I gotta fit in somehow. More than likely. We’ll see what the forecast is… it’s kind of got its own life of its own right now.”
The answer satisfied Drinkwitz. “That’s the only question I needed to find out for the day,” he said before signing off.
Undefeated Missouri (5-0) hosts Alabama (4-1) at Faurot Field this Saturday. The Crimson Tide and Tigers are scheduled for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff, with the game airing on ABC.
