Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has insisted that any resolution regarding Alexander Isak’s future must be “right for the club,” as the star striker reportedly considers a move amid sustained interest from Liverpool.
Speculation has intensified after the 25-year-old was left out of the squad for the pre-season tour of Singapore. While the official reason for his absence is a thigh injury, reports suggest the Sweden international is exploring his options away from St James’ Park.
Sources indicate that Liverpool remain keen on signing Isak, despite their recent acquisition of striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69m.
Speaking before a pre-season friendly against Arsenal, Howe acknowledged the transfer talk surrounding his player. “Of course there are things going on behind the scenes,” he said, adding that conversations between himself, Isak, and the club will remain private.
Isak, who joined from Real Sociedad in 2022 for approximately £60m, has a contract until June 2028 and was instrumental last season, scoring 27 goals in 42 appearances.
“We would love him to continue his journey at Newcastle,” Howe stated. “He has been magnificent for us since he joined. He’s very popular in the dressing room. Although, whatever happens has to be right for Newcastle.”
Howe explained that Isak is currently in Newcastle having his injury assessed after first reporting an issue with his thigh before the recent friendly against Celtic. “Hopefully he’ll be back soon and playing in the black and white shirt. That’s what we all want to see.”
While Howe expressed confidence that Isak would stay, he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the sport. “I don’t see anything that will change that opinion of mine at the moment – but it’s football and who knows what the future may bring?”
The manager also affirmed the club’s robust financial position and ambitions. “We are in a very strong position financially,” he said. “We are determined to be successful… The journey will continue in an upward trajectory and that’s what we all want.”
