FromSoftware’s experimental, multiplayer-focused title, Elden Ring Nightreign, has proven to be a major success, significantly outperforming initial sales projections.
In its latest earnings report, parent company Kadokawa stated that the game “has performed well beyond initial expectations” and “exceeded expectations” within its gaming segment. While the company did not release specific sales figures, it confirmed its aim for “further sales growth for ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN, original ELDEN RING, and its DLC.”
This report follows publisher Bandai Namco’s announcement in August, which celebrated a 7 billion Yen increase in digital profits, partly attributed to Elden Ring Nightreign‘s player base of over 5 million.
Kadokawa also outlined FromSoftware’s upcoming development slate. A DLC for Elden Ring Nightreign is planned for release in fiscal year 2025. This will be followed by two major releases in 2026: Elden Ring Tarnished Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2, and an entirely new title, The Duskbloods.
The upcoming Nightreign DLC is confirmed to add new playable Nightfarers and bosses. While the base game was praised upon release for its “fresh and fast take on the Soulsborne format,” its long-term replayability was questioned. A significant content expansion could spark a second wave of sales and attention, further building on the title’s unexpected success.
The warm reception for Nightreign also bodes well for FromSoftware’s other multiplayer experiment, The Duskbloods, despite the unique challenges it may face as a PvPvE game exclusive to the Switch 2.
In a previous interview, Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki explained that the idea for the game had been percolating since Dark Souls 3, and that the vast scope of Elden Ring was the final catalyst needed to bring the project to life.
