After six seasons with the New York Giants, where he struggled to live up to expectations as Eli Manning’s successor, quarterback Daniel Jones is experiencing a career renaissance with the Indianapolis Colts.
Released by the Giants midway through last season, Jones signed with Indianapolis in March and has since delivered a stunning performance as the team’s starter. The 28-year-old is putting up career-best numbers, completing 69.6% of his passes for a league-leading 2,404 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Jones’s exceptional play has propelled the Colts to a surprising 7-2 start, placing them first in the AFC South and giving them the second-best record in the conference, trailing only the Denver Broncos. While some may question his long-term future in Indianapolis, his former mentor believes he has proven his worth. Appearing on “Up & Adams,” Eli Manning endorsed Jones for a contract extension.
“Just excited for Daniel,” Manning said. “No one deserves it more, has worked harder… He was a sponge. He wanted to learn. He asked questions. You saw the commitment. He wanted to do the right things all the time. Very coachable.”
The Colts’ success extends beyond their quarterback. The team boasts the NFL’s top-scoring offense, also leading the league in first downs and fourth-down conversion rate. Jones is supported by a strong cast of playmakers, including wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce, tight end Tyler Warren, and running back Jonathan Taylor, who leads the NFL in both rushing yards and touchdowns.
Indianapolis has also shored up its defense, which already features a stout run-stopping unit. Just before the trade deadline, the team acquired two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Sauce Gardner from the New York Jets to bolster its secondary.
Jones’s dramatic turnaround raises questions about his time in New York, sparking debate over whether his previous struggles were a result of the Giants’ development system or a lack of surrounding talent.
