A former North Dakota State University football player has been charged with felony theft after allegedly stealing a designer duffle bag containing over a quarter-million dollars in valuables from a boat on Lake Minnetonka. The incident occurred on the Fourth of July while the boat was docked at Maynard’s Restaurant in Excelsior.
William David Frattalone, 20, of Wayzata, faces one count of theft of property valued over $35,000. According to a criminal complaint, the stolen bag, itself valued at $2,400, contained:
* A Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watch valued at nearly $228,000.
* Approximately $25,000 worth of limited-edition clothing.
* Between $5,000 and $10,000 in cash.
* A $400 bottle of cologne.
* Personal items including a passport, AirPods, and a car key.
The complaint states the victim, who was on a boat with friends including Frattalone, had stored the bag in the boat’s sealed cabin. The bag was discovered missing after the group returned from dining at the restaurant.
Court documents allege that a Maynard’s employee saw Frattalone carrying a large bag through the restaurant, which was against policy, and escorted him out. When another guest on the boat later contacted Frattalone about the missing bag, he reportedly replied that his “parents were wealthy and would write a check for whatever was inside the bag.”
Law enforcement later executed a search warrant at Frattalone’s home, where they recovered the duffle bag in his bedroom. The Rolex watch, however, was not found. Investigators also reportedly found video footage on Frattalone’s cell phone showing him on the boat on the night of the theft.
In early August, Frattalone was dismissed from the NDSU football program. “William Frattalone has been dismissed from the NDSU football team for a violation of team rules,” Head Coach Tim Polasek said in a statement, confirming he would not be allowed to rejoin the team.
Hennepin County Jail records show Frattalone was arrested on August 1 and released on August 4. He is not currently in custody and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on September 11.
