DeaMonte “Chip” Trayanum’s collegiate football career has followed a winding path, and his final season is set to begin with a fitting matchup: his new team, the Toledo Rockets, will face the Kentucky Wildcats, one of his former programs.
Trayanum’s journey began in Akron, Ohio, where he was a four-year starter and three-time state champion at the powerhouse Archbishop Hoban High School. A highly-touted four-star recruit, he possessed the versatility to play either running back or linebacker at the next level.
He committed to Arizona State, where he started every game as a true freshman running back and continued to perform well into his sophomore year. Trayanum then transferred back to his home state to join Ohio State, where he initially transitioned to linebacker and also contributed as a kick returner. By the end of his first season in Columbus, he had moved back to running back, rushing for 83 yards against Michigan. In 2023, he served as the third-string running back but delivered a pivotal moment, scoring the game-winning touchdown in a 17-14 victory over Notre Dame.
Seeking a more prominent role, Trayanum transferred to Kentucky for the following season. However, he appeared in just three games, recording 19 carries for 101 yards without a touchdown. This limited opportunity prompted him to enter the transfer portal once more.
His latest move brought him to Toledo, a decision that not only positions him closer to home but also gives him the chance to be a star player for a MAC team with College Football Playoff aspirations. The 227-pound running back is expected to be a central figure for the Rockets.
“This city has done nothing but welcome me with open arms,” Trayanum told the Toledo Blade. “I’m going into it like any other game. For me, it’s just about staying consistent to my process.”
In his single season with the team, Trayanum is determined to make a lasting impact. “I would definitely love to leave my mark on Toledo,” he added.
