Galatasaray faces a pivotal Champions League night on Tuesday, as a victory over Belgian debutants Union Saint-Gilloise at a packed Rams Park could secure a top-eight position and extend one of Europe’s most impressive streaks this season.
The Turkish giants enter matchday five in ninth place in the 36-team standings with nine points, a position earned through a remarkable turnaround of three consecutive victories. After a bruising 5-1 opening defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, Okan Buruk’s side recovered with key wins, edging Liverpool 1-0, defeating Bodo/Glimt 3-1, and securing a dominant 3-0 victory over Ajax in Amsterdam. Another triumph would mark the first time in club history that Galatasaray has won four consecutive matches in the Champions League proper.
Their continental form is bolstered by a formidable home record. Rams Park has become a fortress, where Galatasaray is unbeaten in 33 matches across all competitions. The team has not lost a European home fixture since a playoff-round defeat to Young Boys last year, compiling a run of 24 wins and nine draws in Istanbul. This confidence was further lifted by a 3-2 league victory against Gençlerbirliği over the weekend, a swift recovery from their first domestic loss of the season.
However, history presents a challenge, as Galatasaray has never defeated a Belgian opponent in UEFA competitions, with a record of four draws and four losses against Club Brugge and Anderlecht. Tuesday’s match will be their first-ever meeting with Union SG.
The Belgian side’s debut Champions League campaign has been a turbulent one. They began with a bold 3-1 win at PSV but were subsequently brought down to earth by heavy 4-0 defeats to Newcastle and Inter, followed by a 3-1 loss at Atletico Madrid. Despite their defensive vulnerabilities, the Belgian league leaders arrive in Istanbul with momentum, having lost just once in their last six matches. Galatasaray’s biggest challenge may be their own depleted squad. Union SG are also contending with their own injury problems. Defender Fedde Leysen was substituted during their weekend win and is now sidelined along with Mohammed Fuseini, Guillaume François, Ivan Pavlic, and goalkeeper Jens Teunckens.
