A Bexar County grand jury on Monday indicted Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez for the murder of actor Jonathan Joss. Alvarez, 57, had previously admitted to fatally shooting the 59-year-old actor on June 1.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. in the 200 block of Dorsey Drive, the site of Joss’s former home which had been destroyed in a fire in January. According to a San Antonio Police report, Joss was at the property checking his mail when Alvarez arrived, and the two began to argue. A witness told officers that Alvarez threatened Joss before shooting him with a rifle. Joss was pronounced dead at the scene.
After being detained, Alvarez reportedly confessed to an officer, stating, “I shot him.” Three days after the shooting, he was released from the Bexar County jail after posting a $200,000 bond.
Alvarez’s attorney, Nico LaHood, has asserted that his client acted in self-defense. “People in Texas have a right not to be a victim. You have a right to self-defense,” LaHood said in a June interview, adding, “we believe that applies here.”
Court records show the case has been assigned to Bexar County’s 437th Criminal District Court, presided over by Judge Joel Perez. A date for Alvarez’s next court appearance has not yet been announced.
