St. Louis Cardinals All-Star second baseman Brendan Donovan was a late scratch from Saturday night’s lineup against the Chicago Cubs due to tightness in his left groin. The team described the move as precautionary.
Donovan, who was selected as an All-Star for the first time this season, leads the Cardinals with 115 hits and holds a .278 batting average. However, the leadoff hitter has struggled since the mid-season break, batting just .188 over his last 18 games with only five hits, all singles, in his last 11 appearances.
In Donovan’s absence, Thomas Saggese started at second base, and center fielder Lars Nootbaar was moved into the leadoff spot in the reshuffled lineup.
