A technical glitch resulted in a broadcast profanity during the second round of The Open Championship on USA Network.
The incident occurred while NBC Sports reporter Smylie Kaufman was providing on-course analysis from the 14th hole at Royal Portrush, where Jon Rahm was preparing for a difficult putt. After commenting on the challenging hole location, Kaufman was heard whispering an expletive, which was inadvertently picked up by a live microphone.
Later in the broadcast, lead announcer Mike Tirico apologized to viewers for the vulgar language. He explained that a technical issue had caused Kaufman’s microphone to remain active when it should have been off.
On the course, Rahm did not convert the 48-foot putt, tapping in for par on the 477-yard hole, which ranked as the most difficult of the day with a 4.45 scoring average.
The high-pressure atmosphere was also visible in Rahm’s own conduct. Known for his expressive play, the LIV Golf star was seen pounding his club into the fairway and kicking it after a poor shot earlier in the round.
