House Democrats are criticizing a government funding bill slated for a vote Wednesday, with some calling for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to resign for allowing it to pass the Senate with Democratic support.
Representative Mike Levin, who previously posted on X that Democrats should “move on from Schumer,” stated, “It’s pretty simple. Either he wouldn’t or couldn’t keep the Senate Democrats together.”
Levin condemned the deal for only promising a future vote on expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies without guaranteeing their extension. He called the lack of a firm commitment from House Speaker Mike Johnson “disgraceful” and a “raw deal for the American people.”
Representative Pramila Jayapal described the outcome as a “betrayal” and was unequivocal when asked if Senate Democrats require new leadership. “Yes, I do,” she stated, adding, “but that’s not in my hands. So that’s up to them.”
Other House Democrats expressed their frustration more broadly. Representative Ayanna Pressley noted, “I think we’re in an unprecedented moment that demands that we consider whether or not it’s the time for new leadership.”
Representative Debbie Dingell reported that her constituents, including TSA workers, are urging her to “keep fighting” on the healthcare issue. Meanwhile, Representative Mark Takano specified that his “ire” was directed at the deal itself rather than at party leadership.
