A passenger on a Mumbai-Kolkata IndiGo flight was handed over to security on Friday after he assaulted a fellow traveller who was experiencing a panic attack. The aggressor now faces potential inclusion on a no-fly list following the incident, which was captured in a video that circulated widely on social media.
The altercation occurred while the aircraft was taxiing for takeoff in Mumbai. A male passenger, reportedly suffering a severe panic attack, began to sob and move through the aisle, asking to deplane. As he passed another passenger’s seat, he was slapped.
Following the assault, other passengers and the cabin crew immediately intervened to de-escalate the situation. They comforted the distressed man and assisted him back to his seat. The remainder of the flight to Kolkata proceeded without further incident.
In a formal statement, IndiGo condemned the passenger’s actions. “We are aware of an incident involving a physical altercation on board one of our flights. Such unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable, and we strongly condemn any actions that compromise the safety and dignity of our passengers and crew. Our crew acted in accordance with established standard operating procedures.”
The airline confirmed the necessary steps were taken upon landing. “The individual involved was identified as unruly and handed over to the security authorities upon arrival. All appropriate regulatory agencies have been duly informed, in line with protocol. We remain committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment on all our flights.”
