Award-winning actress Jean Smart is temporarily stepping away from her one-woman Broadway show, “Call Me Izzy,” to recover from a knee injury.
Producers of the show announced the news on July 8 in an Instagram post. “Jean Smart has injured her knee, and we look forward to having her back on stage as soon as she recovers,” the statement read.
Smart, 73, reposted the message, thanking her supporters for their well wishes and adding, “Looking forward to a speedy recovery!”
During Smart’s absence, two-time Tony Award nominee Johanna Day will assume the title role from July 8 to 11.
“Call Me Izzy” follows a woman trapped in an abusive marriage who finds solace through poetry. The production is Smart’s first Broadway appearance since a 2000 revival of “The Man Who Came to Dinner.” The show’s limited 12-week engagement at Studio 54 is scheduled to conclude on August 17.
Outside of the theater, Smart is celebrated for her Emmy-winning role as legendary comedian Deborah Vance in the acclaimed HBO series “Hacks.”
