Grammy-nominated musician Jelly Roll has accused employees at a Louis Vuitton store in Sydney of treating him like a “criminal” during a recent shopping trip.
The artist shared the experience on social media Wednesday. “The Louis Vuitton in Sydney legitimately just treated us like we were finna [sic] come in and rob that place,” he stated. Referencing his extensive criminal history, he added, “I have never been looked at more like a crim… the last time I was looked at like a criminal this bad, I was an actual criminal.”
The “Save Me” singer has been notably open about his past struggles with addiction and the law, which gave his comments particular weight.
As a teenager, Jelly Roll (born Jason Bradley DeFord) was charged as an adult with aggravated robbery and possession with intent to sell, ultimately serving more than a year in prison followed by seven years of probation. In a 2023 interview with Billboard, he called the incident a “heinous crime,” acknowledging the gravity of his actions. “This is a grown man looking back at a 16-year-old kid that made the worst decision that he could have made in life,” he said.
He has frequently cited the birth of his daughter as the turning point in his life. The country-rock star recalled learning he was a father while in a jail cell, a moment he described as hitting rock bottom. “I was the lowest common denominator in life,” he said in an October 2023 interview. “I was scum of the Earth… and I was like, ‘I’ve got to figure this out.'”
Jelly Roll now views his troubled past as a source of strength and credibility. “I wouldn’t be the man I am today if it wasn’t for what I went through. I think it empowered me. I think it gave me my voice,” he said at the 2023 CMA Awards. He added that overcoming his history motivates him “to always reach back” and help others.
