Former Barcelona star Jordi Alba has firmly dismissed comparisons between teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi, asserting that the legendary forward has no equal. While Alba praised Yamal as a “fantastic player,” he stressed that placing him alongside the sport’s greatest is misguided.
“Comparing him to Leo… there’s no comparison possible. He’s unrivaled, in my opinion,” Alba told El Larguero, noting that he also considers teammates like Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and Gavi to be great players. “Messi is the best in history.”
Alba also addressed Messi’s abrupt 2021 exit from the club, revealing his former teammate was unhappy with the circumstances of his departure. He expressed a strong hope for a future tribute at Camp Nou, an event he believes Messi wants and unequivocally deserves.
“He didn’t like his departure. Leo wants a tribute, and I hope it happens,” Alba said. “He deserves it, and I think it will. It will be a wonderful celebration. Everyone is waiting for that moment.” He added, “It’s a pleasure to have had the good fortune to share so much time with him on and off the pitch.”
