The Kentucky Wildcats have named veteran transfer Zach Calzada their starting quarterback, according to a source.
Calzada, a seventh-year senior, won the position based on his extensive experience, having compiled a 23-9 record over 32 career starts. He beat out highly regarded redshirt freshman Cutter Boley in a competitive preseason camp battle.
His collegiate journey began at Texas A&M, where his most notable performance was leading the Aggies to a 2021 upset over No. 1 Alabama, throwing for 285 yards and three touchdowns. After a season at Auburn, Calzada transferred to Incarnate Word and excelled for two years. In his final season there, he led the team to the FCS playoffs, ranking second in the nation in passing touchdowns (35) and fifth in passing yards (3,744).
Throughout his career, Calzada has thrown for 8,660 yards and 73 touchdowns while adding 380 yards and 11 scores on the ground.
He will make his debut for Kentucky against Toledo on August 30. The Wildcats face a challenging early schedule that includes a Week 2 home game against Ole Miss, followed by road trips to South Carolina and Georgia.
