The U.S. military conducted a lethal strike on a vessel in the southern Caribbean on Tuesday, an action President Donald Trump described as targeting a “drug carrying boat.”
In Oval Office remarks, Trump stated the military had, “just over the last few minutes, literally shot out a boat.” He added that the vessel came from Venezuela and warned, “there’s more where that came from.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the operation on the social media platform X, specifying the target was a “drug vessel which had departed from Venezuela and was being operated by a designated narco-terrorist organization.”
This strike marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration’s campaign against drug cartels, a number of which it has designated as foreign terrorist organizations. The action could have serious implications for the region, where an increased U.S. military presence has already drawn criticism from Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
CNN has requested comment from the Venezuelan government. The incident occurred as Secretary Rubio was traveling to Mexico and Ecuador.
