The Miami Marlins are promoting outfielder Jakob Marsee to the major leagues, requiring a corresponding move to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
Marsee, 24, was acquired from the San Diego Padres last May in the trade for Luis Arraez. A sixth-round pick by the Padres in 2022, he struggled at the Double-A level last year but showed promise in a brief, late-season stint at Triple-A, posting a .275/.370/.363 slash line in 22 games.
Returning to Triple-A Jacksonville this season, Marsee has been exceptional. In 98 games, he has produced a .246/.379/.438 slash line with a 125 wRC+. His performance includes 14 home runs, 47 stolen bases, and an excellent 15.9% walk rate, a hallmark of his minor league career. He has also improved his plate discipline, cutting his strikeout rate from 22.4% last season to 18.9%.
Marsee’s promotion follows the trade of outfielder Jesús Sánchez, creating an immediate opening. A natural center fielder with experience at all three outfield positions, Marsee is viewed by most scouts as at least an average defender. With Kyle Stowers securing left field and Dane Myers handling center, Marsee could slot into Sánchez’s former position in right field.
With a 52-55 record, the Marlins are focused on evaluating young players for the future. The final two months of the season offer Marsee a significant opportunity to prove he can be a regular contributor. His success could bolster a promising young core that includes Stowers, Edward Cabrera, Eury Perez, Agustin Ramirez, and Ronny Henriquez, providing optimism for the team’s near-term competitiveness.
