Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo plans to continue pairing catcher McCann with pitcher Zac Gallen, a decision prompted by the battery’s immediate and significant success.
The move has yielded dramatic results for Gallen, who has shown a remarkable turnaround in his two starts with McCann behind the plate. In those 13 innings, the right-hander is 2-0 with a stellar 0.69 ERA, a 0.85 WHIP, and 19 strikeouts against just one walk. This successful partnership was on full display in Monday’s 6-3 win over the Padres, where Gallen tossed six dominant innings, allowing only one unearned run on five hits while striking out nine.
This performance marks a sharp reversal from Gallen’s preceding nine-start stretch. Before McCann’s arrival on June 23, Gallen had posted a 6.97 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP over 51.2 innings.
In addition to his defensive and game-calling contributions, McCann has also been productive at the plate. In six starts, he is batting 6-for-18 with a home run, two doubles, five runs scored, and three RBI.
