Despite a challenging season that may end with just one victory, Norfolk State University’s football program has seen a dramatic surge in fan attendance, proving that on-field results don’t always dictate success at the gate. The driving force behind this resurgence is the arrival of head coach Michael Vick, whose presence has redefined fan engagement for the Spartans.
Even with an 82 percent increase in season-ticket prices and a revamped Homecoming ticketing system, Norfolk State recorded one of its most successful attendance years in the last decade, defying the team’s most difficult season since 2015.
The most striking evidence of the “Vick effect” came during Homecoming. The 2025 game against South Carolina State drew an astounding 47,273 fans. This figure nearly doubles the 24,960 who attended the 2023 Homecoming game against Morgan State, marking an increase of over 22,000 supporters.
While a new policy requiring all campus event participants to hold a game ticket contributed to the inflated numbers, the sheer scale of the increase points to a much larger factor. The combination of Vick’s celebrity, national media attention, and a more controlled event environment culminated in the largest Homecoming crowd in the university’s history.
The phenomenon extended beyond the season’s premier event. A comparison of the final home games of the 2023 and 2025 seasons reveals a more telling trend of sustained interest. In 2025, with a 1-9 record, the Spartans drew 7,294 fans for their finale against Morgan State. This is more than double the 3,087 fans who attended the 2023 finale when the team had a better record of 3-7. Typically, attendance wanes with a losing record, but under Vick, fan support strengthened, demonstrating a significant rise in the program’s baseline engagement.
Overall, the 2025 season attracted a total of 106,062 fans across five home games. This figure alone surpasses the combined attendance of the 2023 and 2024 seasons and stands as one of the highest season totals in modern Norfolk State history, far exceeding the program’s typical annual average of 8,000 to 15,000.
This boom is fueled by Vick’s national appeal, renewed program relevance within the HBCU community, and a widespread belief that meaningful change is underway, regardless of the current win-loss column.
As Vick stated earlier this year, “People want to support when they feel momentum. Our job is to give them something to believe in.”
While Michael Vick has not yet transformed the Spartans into a winning team, his impact in his first year is undeniable. He has achieved something arguably more foundational for the program’s future: he has made Norfolk State football matter again.
