No. 18 Minnesota Duluth scored two quick first-period goals and went on to defeat the No. 12 Gophers men’s hockey team 3-0 Friday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Daniel Shlaine and Zam Plante found the net just 2:44 apart in the opening period, and Grayden Siepmann added a third goal early in the final frame. UMD goaltender Adam Gajan earned the shutout with 17 saves, as the Bulldogs outshot Minnesota 24-17. Luca Di Pasquo stopped 21 shots for the Gophers, who fell to 2-4-1 on the season.
“We played a really good first four minutes, but the next 56 were not very good for us,” said Gophers coach Bob Motzko. “We couldn’t score a goal and get the effort to make it more exciting for the fans.”
The loss snapped Minnesota’s 104-game scoring streak, dating back to January 7, 2023. It was also the team’s first shutout on home ice since March 6, 2020. The two teams play again Saturday night.
In the women’s matchup, Ava Lindsey scored two second-period goals to lead the No. 3 Gophers to a 4-0 victory over No. 4 Minnesota Duluth. The win extends Minnesota’s unbeaten streak against the Bulldogs to 14 games (13-0-1).
Lindsey, who entered the game with a Division I-leading 12 assists, has found her scoring form. “She got her first one last weekend and now they’re starting to come,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said. “She continues to play the right way and I’m happy to see her get rewarded.”
With the win, the Gophers improved to 8-1, while the Bulldogs dropped to 6-3.
