SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Former NHL star Joe Pavelski birdied his final three holes on Saturday to forge a tie for the lead with retired soccer player Taylor Twellman heading into the final round of the American Century Championship.
Pavelski, who led after the first round, delivered a clutch finish at Edgewood Tahoe to post a 21-point day under the modified Stableford scoring system, matching Twellman’s total of 44. Twellman had surged earlier with a 23-point round.
“Twellman has been playing great,” Pavelski said. “To finish birdie, birdie, birdie and be tied with him, I’ll take that all day.”
Country singer Jake Owen sits in third place with 41 points after an impressive 25-point performance. Carolina Panthers receiver Adam Thielen is fourth at 40 points, while LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam remains in contention with 37.
A pack of former champions is close behind. Three-time winners Tony Romo and Mark Mulder are tied with John Smoltz at 36 points. Stephen Curry, the 2023 champion, and last year’s winner Mardy Fish are both at 35.
In a highlight moment, former MLB star Jimmy Rollins recorded a hole-in-one on the 154-yard, par-3 12th, winning a $325,000 Mastercraft boat.
At the other end of the leaderboard, Charles Barkley dropped to a tie for 61st in the 90-player field with an overall score of minus-7.
