Mondelēz Global LLC has initiated a voluntary recall for four carton sizes of its Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches due to a packaging error that poses a significant risk to individuals with peanut allergies.
According to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement, the recall affects products distributed nationwide in which the individual peanut butter sandwich packs were mistakenly sealed in packaging for the cheese variety. While the outer cartons are correctly labeled and include a peanut allergen advisory, the incorrect inner wrappers do not declare the presence of peanuts.
The FDA warned that “people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming this product.”
The recall is specific to the 8-pack, 20-pack, and 40-pack cartons of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches, as well as the 20-pack Ritz Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack, all with certain “Best When Used By” dates. No other Ritz or Mondelēz products are affected.
Mondelēz confirmed the issue stemmed from a supplier error involving the packaging film. The company stated that corrective actions are underway to prevent a recurrence.
