IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Cade Obermueller was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday as the 63rd overall pick.
The selection follows a standout 2025 season for the Iowa City native, in which he earned third-team All-America honors. Pitching in 15 starts, Obermueller went 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA and struck out 117 batters over 83.1 innings. His strikeout total is the second-highest for a single season in program history.

His father, Wes Obermueller, a former Hawkeye and the program’s current Director of Player Development, was also a second-round draft pick, selected by the Kansas City Royals.
The Hawkeyes finished the 2025 season with a 33-22-1 overall record, placing third in the Big Ten regular season and making their 10th consecutive appearance in the Big Ten Tournament.
