Players Era Festival Triumph Propels Kansas Up National Rankings

Kansas entered the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas with a concerning 3-2 record, including two double-digit losses and a lack of quality wins. The challenge intensified as the Jayhawks faced three games in three days without their best player, Darryn Peterson.

Despite the potential for a difficult week, Coach Bill Self’s team delivered an impressive performance, securing a perfect 3-0 record. The Jayhawks defeated Notre Dame and Syracuse before capping the event with a signature 81-76 victory over a Tennessee team that had been undefeated at 7-0. Instead of potentially falling to a losing record, Kansas now stands at 6-2.

However, due to the tournament’s unconventional format, Kansas’s undefeated run did not result in a championship trophy; the Jayhawks finished third. The 18-team event controversially lacked a traditional bracket structure, allowing for multiple undefeated teams and overshadowing some of the compelling matchups it produced.

The Jayhawks’ strong showing in Las Vegas has significantly impacted the national rankings. In the updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1, Kansas has climbed to No. 14, while Tennessee has fallen to No. 15.

The results also prompted further adjustments in the middle of the rankings. North Carolina (6-0), which holds an earlier victory over Kansas, was moved from No. 19 to No. 13 to remain ahead of the Jayhawks. This shift ensured Kansas was ranked ahead of the Tennessee team it just defeated, while Tennessee stayed ahead of Houston, a team it beat earlier. Consequently, Houston, Michigan State, Texas Tech, and Arkansas were each pushed down one position.

Meanwhile, Arizona continues its eight-day reign at No. 1. The Wildcats boast the nation’s best resume with a 6-0 record that includes wins over three teams ranked in the preseason AP top 15: Florida, UConn, and UCLA. Arizona’s next contest is Saturday at home against Norfolk State.
